Things to do in Tinahely

Walking is the main event — five waymarked loops, the Railway Walk along the Derry, the ancient oaks of Tomnafinnoge, and the Wicklow Way running straight through town. After the boots come off, there's the Courthouse Arts Centre, a square full of cosy pubs, and one of Ireland's biggest country shows in August.

The Wicklow Way

Ireland's first long-distance trail — 131km from Marlay Park in Dublin to Clonegal in Carlow — passes right through the village. The 31km stage from Glenmalure to Tinahely is one of its finest; finish in town, drop your pack at Madeline's, and head out for a pint.

The River Derry

Tinahely takes its name from the River Derry — Tigh na hÉille, "house by the stream". The Derry is a tributary of the Slaney, threading quietly past the village. Perfect for a slow riverside walk or a permit-day on the trout.

Glendalough & the Vale of Avoca

Use Tinahely as a quieter base for Wicklow's headline spots. Glendalough's monastic site is roughly 30 minutes north, and the Meeting of the Waters at Avoca is about half an hour east — both far less hectic when you set off before the Dublin tour buses arrive.

Trad music in the village pubs

Wander to O'Connor's or Murphy's Bar & Bistro on a weekend evening and you'll often catch a session — fiddle, bodhrán, a few songs and locals happy to make room at the bar. For something more remote, The Dying Cow a few miles out is a true country pub.
